Many parents attribute this to “too much sugar.” While sugar certainly plays a role in energy spikes and crashes, there is often a more invisible culprit at play: food additives and natural food chemicals.

The “Total Load” Theory: Why Small Ingredients Matter

Think of your child’s ability to process chemicals like a bucket. Every day, they encounter environmental toxins, stress, and food additives. For most children, the bucket is large enough to hold these without overflowing.

However, many children with ADHD have a “smaller bucket” due to genetic factors or liver detoxification pathways that run a little slower. When that bucket overflows, we see the “ADHD meltdown.”

1. The “Southampton Six” and Artificial Colours

In Australia, we still see many of the artificial colours that have been restricted in other parts of the world. Colours such as Tartrazine (102), Sunset Yellow (110), and Allura Red (129) have been clinically linked to increased hyperactivity in children.

These synthetic dyes are not just “visual.” They can interfere with nerve signaling and deplete the body of the Zinc needed for focus. If you notice your child’s ears turning red or their behaviour shifting after a “brightly coloured” snack, their nervous system is likely reacting to a synthetic trigger.

2. The Preservative Problem: Bread and Juice

One of the most common triggers I find in my Melbourne practice isn’t in lollies, it’s in the “healthy” supermarket bread.

Calcium Propionate (282) is an anti-mould agent used in many commercial breads and wraps. In sensitive children, it is a known trigger for irritability, restlessness, and “defiant” behaviour. Similarly, Sodium Benzoate (211), often found in fruit juices and soft drinks, can significantly increase hyperactive behaviour.

When we remove these “hidden” preservatives, parents often report that their child feels “calmer in their own skin” within just a few days.

3. Natural Chemicals: Salicylates and Amines

This is where my work as a “medical detective” becomes essential. Some children react not just to man-made chemicals, but to natural ones found in healthy foods.

  • Salicylates: Found in high amounts in strawberries, grapes, oranges, and almonds.
  • Amines: Found in fermented foods, chocolate, and aged meats.

A child who is sensitive to salicylates might eat a punnet of “healthy” strawberries and suddenly become argumentative or struggle to fall asleep. This is why a “one-size-fits-all” ADHD diet rarely works; we must identify your child’s specific threshold.

1. Are there specific “numbers” on food labels I should always avoid?

In Australia, I recommend parents start by watching for the “Southampton Six” artificial colours: 102, 104, 110, 122, 124, and 129. Additionally, keep an eye out for the common bread preservative 282 (Calcium Propionate) and the beverage preservative 211 (Sodium Benzoate). These have the strongest clinical links to increased hyperactivity and irritability in sensitive children.

2. Is “sugar-free” always a better option for a child with ADHD?

Not necessarily. Many “sugar-free” or “diet” products contain artificial sweeteners like Aspartame (951) or Sucralose (955). For a neurodivergent child, these chemicals can be just as overstimulating as a sugar spike, often leading to headaches, mood swings, or increased restlessness. We aim for whole-food sweetness from fruit wherever possible.

3. Why does my child react to “healthy” foods like strawberries or grapes?

This is often due to Salicylates, which are natural chemicals produced by plants as a defence mechanism. While healthy for most, some children with a “low chemical threshold” cannot process them efficiently. If your child seems to “rev up” after eating high-salicylate fruits or honey, it may indicate that their liver detoxification pathways need support.

4. How long does it take for food additives to leave a child’s system?

Most artificial colours and preservatives are water-soluble and begin to clear the body within 24 to 48 hours. However, the “behavioural hangover”, the neuro-inflammation caused by the reaction, can sometimes last for 3 to 4 days. This is why many parents notice that a “party meltdown” on Saturday doesn’t fully resolve until Tuesday.

5. Does my child have to be on a restrictive diet forever?
