My Holistic Parent’s Guide to ADHD: A Functional Approach to Root Causes & Resilience
If you are reading this, you likely know the feeling of “the phone call.” It’s the call from the school about your child’s inability to sit still, the impulsive outburst at recess, or the “zoning out” during maths.
Or perhaps the struggle is closer to home. It’s the morning battle to get shoes on, the meltdowns over textures, or the exhausting “tired but wired” energy at 9:00 PM when the rest of the house is asleep.
As a parent, you want to do the best for your child. You may have a diagnosis of ADHD, ADD, or anxiety, or you might just know that your child’s nervous system is running on overdrive. You may have tried medication, or you may be looking for alternatives before going down that path.
Here is the truth: Your child is not “broken,” and you are not failing.
In my clinical practice here in Melbourne’s Bayside, I view ADHD not just as a set of behaviours to be managed, but as a unique “bio-individual” puzzle. Symptoms like impulsivity, poor focus, and emotional dysregulation are often the body’s way of shouting that something is out of balance physiologically.
Whether you see me in my clinic or via Telehealth from anywhere in Australia, my goal is the same: to act as a “medical detective” to find those imbalances, whether they are in the gut, the diet, or the genes, and correct them, so your child can thrive.

Moving Beyond the Diagnosis: Why “Bio-Individual” Matters
Standard treatment for ADHD often focuses on symptom management, usually through stimulants that increase dopamine in the brain. While this can be a helpful tool for some, it rarely asks the question: Why is the dopamine low in the first place?
Is it a nutrient deficiency? Is it a gut infection blocking absorption? Is it a genetic inability to clear toxins?
By taking a functional naturopathic approach, we look at the “root causes.” We don’t just want to suppress the fidgeting; we want to support the neuro-development and nervous system safety that allows a child to feel calm in their own body.
1. The Gut-Brain Axis: Why Focus Starts in the Fold of the Gut
You may have heard the phrase “trust your gut,” but in 2026, science tells us the connection is much more literal. We now know the gut is your child’s “Second Brain.”
The gut and the brain are connected by the Vagus Nerve, a superhighway that transmits information in split seconds. If your child’s gut is inflamed, due to food intolerances, bacterial overgrowth, or a history of antibiotics, it sends “danger” signals up the vagus nerve to the brain.
This keeps your child’s nervous system in a chronic state of “Fight or Flight.” Physically, they cannot sit still because their body thinks they are under threat.
The Microbiome Factor
Furthermore, 90% of serotonin (the “happy” chemical) and a significant amount of dopamine (the “focus” chemical) are produced in the gut. If your child struggles with bloating, constipation, or “picky eating,” their behaviour is likely linked to their microbiome.

2. Fueling the Neurodivergent Brain: Identifying Nutrient Gaps
A common misconception is that if a child eats a “balanced diet,” they get all the nutrients they need. However, neurodivergent brains often have higher metabolic demands. They are like high-performance sports cars; they burn through fuel faster than the average brain.
In my clinic, I frequently see three major deficiencies that mimic or exacerbate ADHD symptoms:
- Zinc: Crucial for the synthesis of dopamine. Low zinc is often linked to “picky eating” and poor impulse control.
- Magnesium: The body’s “relaxation mineral.” When a child is stressed or anxious, they dump magnesium rapidly, leading to a “short fuse.”
- Iron: Essential for cognitive endurance. Low ferritin (stored iron) is a leading cause of restless sleep and fidgeting.
Correcting these gaps isn’t just about giving a multivitamin; it’s about using therapeutic doses of bioavailable minerals to restore the brain’s reserves.

A Recent Case Study: Leo’s Story – From “Defiant” to Calm
Note: Names and identifying details have been changed to protect patient privacy.
Leo, a 7-year-old boy from Brighton, came to see me after his parents had reached a breaking point. The school reports were consistent: Leo was disruptive, unable to transition between tasks without a meltdown, and often aggressive toward other children. At home, his parents described him as “Jekyll and Hyde,” sweet one moment, and exploding with rage the next.
They had been told it was a behavioural issue and that they needed stricter discipline. But his mother told me, “I can see he wants to be good, but his body won’t let him.”
She was right.
We ran a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA), a non-invasive test using a small sample of hair. The results were immediate and striking. Leo wasn’t just “naughty”; he had a severe zinc-to-copper imbalance and traits of liver insufficiency (meaning his detox pathways were affected).
His Copper levels were through the roof. In the body, excess Copper acts as a nervous system stimulant, it drives adrenaline and suppresses dopamine. Essentially, Leo’s brain was being chemically bathed in “fight or flight” hormones 24 hours a day. No amount of discipline could fix a biological adrenaline surge.
The Protocol: We didn’t use heavy medication. Instead, we used a targeted protocol of:
- Zinc Picolinate and Vitamin B6 to support the clearance of excess copper.
- Magnesium Glycinate to soothe his nervous system at night.
- A gentle liver support formula to help his body process the mineral dump.
The Outcome: It wasn’t an overnight fix, but by week six, the phone calls from school stopped. His teacher asked, “What have you done differently?” By month three, Leo was able to sit through dinner and fall asleep without a battle.
Leo’s story is a reminder: Behaviour is communication. When we fixed the biology, the “behaviour” resolved itself.

Have you ever noticed your child’s behaviour change within 30 minutes of eating a party pie or a red lolly? You aren’t imagining it.
Children with sensitive nervous systems often have a reduced ability to clear “excitotoxins” from their bodies. Synthetic chemicals – like Tartrazine (102), Allura Red (129), and preservatives like Sodium Benzoate (211) – can cross the blood-brain barrier and overstimulate the neurons.
It’s not just “junk food,” either. High levels of Salicylates (found naturally in grapes, tomatoes, and almonds) can also trigger reactions in sensitive children.
Part of our work together is becoming a detective in your own pantry, reducing the “total toxic load” on your child’s liver so they can process the world without being overwhelmed.

4. The Sleep Connection: Why the ADHD Brain Struggles to “Power Down”
“He’s tired, but he just won’t stop moving.”
I hear this from parents in Bayside almost every week. Sleep issues in neurodivergence are rarely about “bad habits”; they are often biological.
Many children with ADHD have a delayed Circadian Rhythm. Their bodies produce Cortisol (the wake-up hormone) late in the evening when it should be dropping. This suppresses Melatonin (the sleep hormone), leading to that frustrated, hyperactive state at bedtime.
Restoring sleep architecture is non-negotiable. We use strategies like “Digital Sunsets,” specific light hygiene, and nutrients like L-Theanine to help the brain transition from “alert” to “rest.”

4 Common Myths About Natural ADHD Support
In the world of paediatrics, there is a lot of noise. Let’s clear up the misconceptions I hear most often in my clinic.
Myth 1: “It’s just bad parenting or too much screen time.” The Reality
While boundaries and screens matter, they rarely cause the physiological symptoms we see in ADHD. You cannot discipline away a gut infection or a genetic methylation issue. A child with a regulated nervous system can handle screen limits; a child with a dopamine deficiency often cannot. We fix the biology so your parenting strategies can actually work.
Myth 2: “Natural means slow (or weak).” The Reality
There is a belief that natural medicine is just “drinking tea and hoping for the best.” Functional Naturopathy is different. It is pathology-led. When we use targeted nutrients (orthomolecular medicine) at therapeutic doses to correct a deficiency, the changes in a child’s focus and mood can be profound and relatively fast.
Myth 3: “If we treat the gut, we have to stop the medication.” The Reality
This is not an “either/or” choice. Many of the families I work with choose to use stimulant medication to help with school, while we work in the background to support the gut, liver, and appetite. In fact, supporting the body nutritionally often helps the medication work more effectively with fewer side effects (like the dreaded afternoon crash).
Myth 4: “Sugar is the only dietary trigger.” The Reality
Parents often cut out sugar and see no change, so they assume diet doesn’t work. However, in many neurodivergent children, additives (preservatives 282, 202) and natural food chemicals (salicylates and amines) are far more potent triggers than sugar. A child might be reacting to the “healthy” strawberries or almonds in their lunchbox.
5. Stop Guessing, Start Testing: The Role of Functional Pathology
If you have tried dietary changes and standard supplements but haven’t seen a shift, it might be time to look deeper.
As a functional practitioner, I use advanced pathology testing to see exactly what is happening inside your child’s biochemistry. This takes the guesswork out of treatment.
Two of the most profound conditions I screen for are:
- Pyroluria (Pyrrole Disorder): A genetic metabolic condition where the body excretes massive amounts of Zinc and B6 during stress. This causes severe inner tension and anxiety.
- Copper Toxicity: An imbalance where high copper levels act as a stimulant, driving adrenaline and preventing calm.
These conditions are often missed in standard blood tests but can be life-changing when identified and treated.

Frequently Asked Questions about ADHD
Does my child need a referral from a GP to see you?
No, you do not need a referral to book a consultation with a Naturopath. However, I often work collaboratively with GPs and Paediatricians to ensure your child has a complete team of support.
We live in rural Australia. Can we do this via Telehealth?
Absolutely. A large portion of my clinic is conducted via secure video Telehealth. We can post functional testing kits (like hair analysis or stool tests) directly to your door, and we review the results together online. Distance is not a barrier to getting answers.
Will I have to put my child on a restrictive diet forever?
No. The goal of naturopathic gut healing is resilience, not restriction. We may use a short-term therapeutic diet (like gluten-free or low-salicylate) to lower inflammation while we heal the gut lining. But the ultimate goal is to broaden your child’s diet, not shrink it.
Is functional testing covered by Medicare?
Standard pathology requested by your GP is covered by Medicare. However, functional tests like the GI-Map (Microbiome) or HTMA (Hair Analysis) are specialised private lab tests and are not covered by Medicare. During our Discovery Call, I can walk you through the costs so there are no surprises.
My child is a very picky eater. How will I get them to take supplements?
I get it, sensory issues make swallowing pills nearly impossible for many ADHD kids. I specifically prescribe tasteless powders, liquids, or creams that can be hidden in smoothies or applied to the skin. We work with your child’s sensory preferences, not against them.
